Meet Your Team

Steve Schiestel, CFA

Chief Investment Officer

I have 19 years’ experience as a fiduciary advisor. Prior to co-founding Grand Capital, I led the investment practice for the Michigan market at First Merit Private Bank. I was also the Chief Investment Officer at Citizens Bank Wealth Management, managing all aspects of the investment division for a $2.2 billion portfolio. Before being promoted to Chief Investment Officer, I was the Head of Investment Strategy, Director of Financial Planning, and Portfolio Manager at Citizens.

Currently, I’m the Frederick S. Addy Endowed Professor of Practice in Finance at Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business, where I teach Security Analysis and Corporate Finance along with classes in our Financial Planning and Wealth Management Program.

I received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan-Flint and an M.B.A. from Michigan State University. I am a Chartered Financial Analyst and earned this designation in 2000.

I grew up in mid-Michigan in a “Richie Cunningham" traditional American family. My father worked for General Motors and my mother stayed at home, ran the household, and was the family CEO. I went to a Catholic grade school and public high school before attending college.

I served for six years on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties which provides resources including comprehensive child welfare services for abused and disadvantaged children (food, clothing, and counseling services).

Steve and his family

My wife, Melissa, and I have been married for 29 years. We live in Davison, which is located in mid-Michigan, outside of Flint. We have three children—24-year-old twins, Abby and Michael, and an 21-year-old son, Joey.  Michael and Abby are graduates of MSU (Finance and Nursing) while Joey is still a student at MSU.

We particularly enjoy taking family vacations and have traveled to Boston, New York, California, New Orleans, Hawaii, and many other places in between.

It’s easy to state that I treat students, co-workers, vendors, and clients the way I would like to be treated. This isn’t an empty slogan. It guides my life.
